3 Comments Apolloverse's Top 11 Films of 2011 01/01/2012
I haven't posted anything in this blog for months and for my latest post in a long time, I want to share my top films for the year 2011. Again, I am not a real film critic and the only criteria I use to evaluate the films is pretty much just my preference and how much I liked it overall. Also, it's not possible for me to watch all of the films that were shown in the year 2011 so these films are just based from what I was able to watch (I was able to watch a lot though). Also, there may be some here that wasn't released in the Philippines but I included it anyway since it was released in 2011 pa rin (Thank God for torrent downloads) Anyway, here goes: 11. The Tree of Life Directed by: Terrence Mallick Starring: Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, Sean Penn With the risk of seeming like a pretentious arse, I'm putting The Tree of Life in my list of favorite films this year. This impressionistic film follows the story of a Midwestern American family in the 50s and the journey of the eldest son, Jack, through his disillusioned adult years. The film contains so many experimental elements and tries so hard to scope everything, from the creation of the universe to its demise, through the vision of this small Texan family. It does fall short in a lot of aspects and maybe a more linear narrative would be better for the film's structure but one has to give props to this one of a kind film that just left me questioning my existence after watching it. 10. X-Men: First Class Directed by: Matthew Vaughn Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, January Jones... Yep, I know this film probably won't be in any other's top films (and the real critics wouldnt even care for it) but I've always been an X-men kid and I really enjoyed this film as a prequel to the Xmen that we've come to know. However, this was on my list for a reason other than me liking Xmen that much. The film's storytelling is efficient and it's not specialFX-hungry, meaning it really tells a story not just visual spectacles and show-off of computer generated techniques. 9. Drive Directed by: Nicolas Winding Refn Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan I don't know how to describe this film but it feels like a neonoir classic already with elements from an 80s action/heist-gone-wrong film, car chases and bullet smashes. It's bloody, it's violent, it's polarizing but I enjoyed watching it, not to mention the solid performance given by Ryan Gosling. Even it's scoring is awesome! 8. Source Code Directed by: Duncan Jones Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga Easily the year's smartest sci-fi, techno-thriller film, Source Code centers on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. I love films that deal with time-space manipulation, theories of parallel universes and overall mindfuckery and this film has that. The film almost felt like Inception's cousin (not as awesome though) 7. Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington Directed by: Jade Castro Starring: Martin Escudero...(well kitang kita naman sa poster ang cast) The sole Filipino film on my list this year, Zombadings is a films starring little known actors (well there's Roderick Paulate, Janice de Belen and John Regala for support) with a solid story told in a non-conventional manner, somehow challenging cinematic standards in the country and still addressing issues that aren't tackled by huge mainstream studio releases. 6. Carnage Directed by: Roman Polanski Starring: Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly I'm not really a fan of films happening in real time (with the exception of Before Sunrise) but this one stuck with me. Polanski has always been into the dark side of humanity so its not much a surprise he'll be drawn to do something like this, a black comedy of claustrophobic proportions. Every character has a certain level of caricature in them and each actor gave really good performances! 5. 50/50 Directed by: Jonathan Levine Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen This film could've easily been horrible, dark humor dealing with mortality but backed by smart character, convincing actors and a well-written script with a heart, it all works out. The absence of too much sentimentality and self-pity is what makes this film stand out from others straddling the same topic. It's a refreshingly and surprisingly thoughtful buddy movie. 4. The Help Directed by: Tate Taylor Starring: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer Adapted from the novel of the same name, this film tells the story of a young white woman and the black maids in Jackson, Mississippi during the Civil Rights era. Given the heavy premise, the film is actually quiet with no over-the-top expected drama yet powerful and captivating, backed with very likable characters and superb acting from the cast. I never saw it as an award bait when I watched it so I am pleasantly surprised when I've come to read the accolades it is receiving. 3. Midnight in Paris Directed by: Woody Allen Starring: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard Midnight in Paris is about a young man's great love for a city, Paris (especially its 20s era), and the illusion people have that a life different from theirs would be much better. Charming, lighthearted, clever and filled with a loving embrace of art told in an upfront fantasy way, the movie deals with themes of modernism and nostalgia. 2. Bridesmaids Directed by: Paul Feig Starring: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rode Byrne, Melissa McCarthy I love comedies. As much as I love to watch films that have deep psychological shit or movies set in dystopian universes, sometimes I just want to watch a good ol' comedy film and Bridesmaids, for me, is the best comedy film of the year. The genre-busting film is a union of genuine characters and gross-out gags that are usually not seen in most comedies starred by women. It's raunchy, it's fearless, it's magnificently written! Out of all the films in this list, this is definitely the film I recommend the most for everyone! 1. Melancholia Directed by: Lars von Trier list as the best films Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg I was drawn to watch this film because of the poster. Kirsten Dunst floating on a body of water on her wedding dress that reminds us of the painting Ophelia by John Everette Millais. And so I watched and after watching, I was stunned. It's hauntingly beautiful. The introductory sequence alone is enough to capture one's attention. The film was so polished and had elements of romanticism that greatly clashes with its apocalyptic premise. Unlike most disaster films, the story is not focused on the characters' struggle for survival but with the study of the human psyche during a disaster and the acceptance of the incoming demise. I am haunted by the film in ways that I cant exactly clear in my mind. It's a shame that this film seems to be snobbed by the Golden Globes. Also, worth noting is Kirsten Dunst performance in this film. So there's my top films for 2011. Runners-up include Limitless, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Babae sa Septic Tank and No Other Woman. Also, I would've put The King's Speech on the list since it was widely released this 2011 but previously shown, limited on 2010. Another is that there are films I think would've been on the list have I seen them, these are The Artist, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Shame, Hugo, Margaret, The Descendants and Weekend. (I am yet to see Another Earth too but I already downloaded it) Anyway, so that's it. Tell me below if you agree with my list or not. :) My whole college experience was a blast of fun but of course it was a lot of work aside from maintaining my academic records strong, I have been participating in several extra-curricular activities and handling projects and events initiated by our organization and I'd like to say I did really well juggling my roles throughout college. Here's a little photos I gathered from which. This was for our first ever TVC shoot and I was the Director of Photography/Creative Director/Assistant/all-around guy, it was a team effort though. I still remember this shoot for Femme Tissue and I think we got good feedback from our professor naman, got us the exemption for final exams! hah! After this, we've shot plenty more of videos as requirements for several subjects. Creative Video Portfolios, to short films, to ad prod tvc entry, etc... to this one... Ang pakulo namin for Service Marketing video docu was Dora the Explorer...only it's Andie the explorer. It was epic but even my epic epicness was surpassed by the queen of awesome Cheenee with her memorable music video for "Your Love is my Drug" Then there were the plans we had to write and the defenses we had to take. Napakarami, first year pa lang tinadtad na kami ng marketing plans, IMC plans, media plans, strategic plans at kung anoano pa. My favorite defense that I took though was for Marketing Research 1, I was the most confident there, confident with our work and how we presented, everything went smooth and even hailed best of the batch! :D That other photo is me with the research team, team awesome!! Then there's the thesis. Oh the thesis... That's me with my thesis partner and partner in many papers that I've passed and partner even sa 2nd internship ko, Chinnich! Totally my polar opposite sa personality but somehow we work really well together kaya di na kami naghiwalay. The research wasn't so awesome, like major revisions pa talaga but we worked it out and got a decent grade naman, sucked lang na ang baba ng final grade namin dun but still. and that's a photo of me before our thesis defense, nagawa pang magphoto not knowing minutes later, nasabon na ako ng panel and I cracked, like really cracked under pressure, I was so stuttering, aaaagh pathetic!!! I was also the assigned Events and Production Head ng org namin, meaning I have handled a lot of well...events and production. It all started final week ng junior year when we were called sa department by Ms Mian Rayray 3 days before this event and biglang sinabihan kami na hey, be part of the production team and we were like O_O. But we did it anyway and my my, baptism by fire as what Ms Rayray told us, grabe pala magproduction sa mga ganitong event. That's me there ^ sa CBA alumni homecoming, my first event where I was the technical director for visual presentations (pati na rin sa ibang music), wow lang nakakastress! After which, nagtuloytuloy na hanggang naging ako na and defacto production head lagi ng events organized by the department and our org. photo with the first ever production team photos with the prod team ng other events oh and let's not forget about the adclash, one of my college highlights and hmm...i think i'll blog about this on a separate part. then there's the biggest one we've handled, the Lasallian Festival kickoff celebration. aaagh, grabe natest kami lahat dito. I don't wanna talk about too much about this since it will always be forever ingrained in my head but this event is Murphy's law at it's finest and in the end, we did what we had to do and it was a very challenging experience! oh and i dont have much photos from my internships but here's one na lang. This one's from Summit Media, my first company, sa events department ako and it was a nice experience, very stressful ang events and as much as I have been organizing events and productions in college, i realize maybe this is not my league, I can do events organizing paminsan minsan but not everyday of the month, as in as a living, damn. Also production, sobraaaaaang stress, experienced that with my 2nd internship with a production house, the Jungle Gym. Man, that's no industry for the madaling mapagod like physically, endurance talaga ito! Kaya hanga ako sa mga tao who chose to have a career sa ganyang industry, hats off! :D I decided to write a post about my college life, something to look back on a few years down the road na rin and I can't really fit everything in just one post so I'm dividing it in parts. This part is dedicated to the friendships I've made throughout my college life. I came to La Salle as a transferee and I started as a student with irregular schedule so it's really hard to make friends when everyone in your class happen to know each other pretty well na since lagi sila magkakasama and ako kaklase lang nila sa isang subject. That would explain why my first semester in the campus was a bum, so by second semester of my first year I decided to enroll sa classes ng mga kabatch at kacourse ko talaga na rin. And there... I started making friends, unang mga nakaclose ko talaga ang mga 1-1 kahit 1-3 ang section ko nun. I'm not able to find other more decent photos pero yeah, ilan sila sa mga unang naging friends ko sa lasalle talaga. (gahd, ambabata pa natin dyan, pare-pareho lang tayong ampapayat pa nun) Of course there's Kim, Shalli and Princess, my first clique (I know, so high school) sa school. We all have very different personalities yet somehow we jive well together. :) sila din una ko kasama nung una akong nakanood ng movie on 3d. O_O Kim, however dropped out of college to move to the United States. We miss you Kim. Malandi! I will never forget your epic photo na bakat...yeah, alam mo na yun! :D Of course, andyan ang Marche members, my college org na I'm unexpectedly very active naman. See, I came to college just wishing to coast through it. I never planned to join any organization naman or be an active officer or whatever. Marche was at first a by-invitation only org so I was pleased to be invited and I just gave it a try...until I went on to be the de facto Event and Production Head (more about that in some later post) Marche's Grand Torche is Michelle Garilva, Golden Scroll Awardee (translation: the best graduating student sa buong college namin), kasali sa Markprof top 25 sa buong Pilipinas at Ayala Young Leader Delegate. Let me tell you something about Michelle (yeah she deserves a separate paragraph here, haha). I first met Mich nun second semester ng first year ko dito and judging from the way she talked and pretty much her whole whole aura, I knew this girl is not the type I would really be close with. You know, the competitive overachiever who may think she's so much better than us type. She wasn't a snob, she was actually really sweet...too sweet though that I felt it was all a front but time passed, I got to know her more and eventually I realize, it's not a front. She's really this genuine person with a good heart that really show, who is so much on a different league that anyone of us, that when she talks, everyone listens and I admire her for that. She's one of the people I like talking to about mature stuff especially about career. She's also very instrumental for me how I gain a bit of confidence about my skills cause she trusted me with a lot of responsibilities during my stint sa Marche and she saw the potential in me or whatever. She also made me realize more san ako nababagay na field...so san man ako makarating Mich, and I really truly mean this, thank you kasi you're one of the first people who gave me a shot to prove myself (kahit within the org lang). Of course, there's my team! That's France, Laiza, Chin and Tracy, one of the most hardworking students sa batch namin. (Deny all you want pero alam nyo yan!) I really hope they all do well sa endeavors nila. And Chin there's my co-intern sa 2nd internship ko and I saw her grow, pati yung baby steps nya sa pagaaral nya sa photoshop, I know magiging successful storyboard artist sya and at least I can say that I was there, nakita ko yun nung nagsisimula pa lang sya. :) Ayan, wala akong matinong photo namin dalawa, ito na lang at work kami. That's my advertising professor, Madame Anne C. Dumala Rayray...yes, professor. I never really thought I would ever be friends like this with a professor, maybe because of her personality but whatever. It's nice that we get to hangout with her as well and we see her as...well just like us: messed up, crazy, bombarded with issues. Alam mo na yun ma'm! :) At syempre I got to post something about team K'Fu that was really just from a random expression to shut someone up or end a conversation. That's Shalli, Princess and the babaeng bakla herself, Imyang Fernandez. This girl is one of the most memorable personalities sa buong batch namin, who wouldn't know her? She has this effervescent personality that when she walks into a room, she commands attention and people will take notice. She's the life of the party with a personality fierier than the sun and I am not even exaggerating. Ohhhhhh wapak ka teeeehhh!!! Lastly of course, there's Team Happiness, im not exactly a part of this group since I know para to sa mga original MKA section 1 pero im pretty much close withthem and towards the end of the school year, nakakahangout ko na sila and they're pretty cool. Mahaharot and magugulo, di nauubusan ng pinagkukwentuhan, masaya kasama. Then of course andyan na rin yung subgroup na Centipede Family aka Higad Society, grupo ng mga messed-up individuals na may kani-kaniyang issue sa buhay...yes, mga makakati!!!! So there. We'll all have to part ways soon and we may lose communication pero I really hope makabonding ko pa rin mga to, sana walang mawala sa circle and even if we won't be able to meet each other regularly, I hope andun pa rin ang connection. Goodluck sa atin wherever we may go and which path shall we take, I love you guys! yeah, I just said it...i don't say that often but really Thank You sa lahat ng mga naging kaibigan ko, I know I'm not the easiest person to like and be friends with so really...thank you! While writing this, I saw a tweet from someone that there will always be that person you will not miss once you graduate, definitely hindi itong mga ito sa akin! :) Apollo recommends Vida Diva 03/03/2011
This site is a product of a school project. We were tasked to design and create a website/blogsite, post entries, include our photos and social media links and pretty much market ourselves through the website and somehow I went above and beyond the requirement and decided to continue posting and keeping the site alive (although I am sorry for not being able to post a lot here) Anyway, another project that we were tasked to do is look for a small business around the area, create a website for it and market it, like for real marketing this time, we're dealing with a real client! And I can say we did pretty well given our limited resources and time constraint, you be the judge. CLICK THE PHOTO to link you to the site. or go directly to http://vidadiva.weebly.com Yes, it is a Nail Art Salon, located along Mangubat Drive here in Dasmarinas, Cavite. And child, yes I am well-aware I am not the market for this kind of business but judging from the services that they give (and I've see them first-hand) and the reactions of customers, they're good. And of course, I had to learn much about the business since I wrote articles relating to the business and I am impressed with the things I found out. For example, they're offering eco systems nail design and i don't have to blabber much about that but basically it's environment-friendly products, minus that stingy smell of nail polish. They also offer OPI technology. If you're not well aware of that, it's a high end line of nail polish materials and it's made of quality materials that looks really good on your nails and I'm not just saying this because i have to, but because I saw the how they turned out, it's really different from the other cheap-ass nail polish. Who knew these services are offered in the comfort of our vicinity? You don't have to go to the mall or other high-end boutique where they'll probably overcharge you. Of course, prices at Vida Diva are higher than your traveling manicurista but c'mon, the quality of service and the ambiance of the place, they're really making sure you get your money's worth (and it's not even that pricey compared to other more high-end nail art salons which would pretty much give you the same service) So ladies and yeah, maybe some fellas over there, if you wanna get you get your nails done and pretty-fied and all, I suggest VIDA DIVA, totally worth it! Vicinity Map of VIDA DIVA Last Day at the Jungle. 02/19/2011
And so yesterday was my last day of internship for the Jungle Gym, an advertising production house and I can say that that experience is a really fruitful one and I’ve learned a lot. Prior to The Jungle Gym, I was an intern for Summit Media in its Events Department. It was fun there, I made a lot of friends with my co-interns, and it’s nice to get exposed to some glamorous events (and the not-so-glamorous behind the scenes nitty-gritty) But I felt that I wanted more out of it and it doesn’t seem like I’ll be getting any pa, the opportunity came of applying for another internship position for a production house. Actually, my friend Chinnich was the one offered and I just tagged along and weeks later I was going every MWF to The Jungle Gym office at Makati. And now, talking in post-internship extensia, I believe I made the right choice in switching companies. I’ve been exposed to the actual dealings involved and the whole process it takes to produce an advertisement, the shoots, the meetings, the long hours. I’ve seen it in the people and I can conclude that Advertising Production is one helluva career. I would usually wonder how they do it, the stress, the pressure and all those in between. However, I can see it in all of them, in their faces and how they work and how they talk about what they do, they really love what they are doing that this passion just drives them to keep pushing further and further. And I admire that about all of them So on our last night there, we ate dinner together and had some real deep pep talk with the team. That’s one of the things I like about my internship there, they talk to us, like really talk. They take an interest in our lives and what we wanna be or where we wanna go. I was called everyday and referred to as Andy and not “Intern”. So anyway, they gave a lot of advices and assured us that the Jungle Gym is always open for us. Sir Ace gave a few parting words like Know Your Ultimate Goal, Never Doubt Yourself, Stay Humble and Don’t Be Afraid To Commit Mistakes. I’ll keep those in mind. J Honestly, I still don’t know what path I wanna take. Should I pursue production, as in production designing and styling? Or work for an advertising agency as a copywriter perhaps? Or maybe I would work better on the client side, as in brand management? I don’t know and I’m yet to find out. After graduation I’ll probably take some time off to think about it muna and then...i don’t know, trust my guts and believe that the decisions I make, the dots i position, will somehow connect by itself in the future leading to that ultimate goal. And oh lastly, I don’t think they’ll ever be reading this but I wanna thank talaga every single one sa whole Jungle Gym team from Sir JR, Sir Joey and Miss Portia. To Sir Ace, Sir Hared and Sir Erwynn. Kay Ate Nora, the Accountant and pati si Kuya Caloy and of course the directors, Direk Nick and Direk Mike. Thank You. I’ll never forget these first few people i’ve met in the production industry and i’m glad sila cause they’re really awesome!! Till we meet again within The Jungle! oh yeah, and this is me with my co-interns Apollo goes to Nuvali. 02/19/2011
Everyone that knows me personally can attest that i’m not a very spontaneous person. I like planning ahead of time, i don’t like being caught off guard and I actually like routines. But my friends aren’t and I want to be spontaneous din naman so once again, I agreed to come with them. 9:00ish in the morning that Thursday, I was in a class and my friend Aimee and princess texted and invited me to go out with them. It was so out of nowhere and I had things planned that day but I agreed to come anyway and they waited for me since I was doing some thesis work and then we’re off. I didn’t exactly where we were going a few minutes before we left. We went to Nuvali and it was really beautiful there, I’m surprised something like that existed down South. I don’t know much about the whole place, the concept or the whole evoliving or the corporate sustainability behind it, I just know it’s a project of Ayala Land and it’s a nice break from the busy streets of the metro. There’s a few establishments na within the area. We ate lunch at Conti’s then tried the boat ride pa that costs Php30 per head. You can also rent a bike for Php15/hour. I would’ve rented but it was so hot that day. Then the koi fishies, aaaaagghh, andameeeeeee. That’s not even an understatement, they’re literally overflowing sa dami. So that’s it, I wasn’t able to take pictures at all since super biglaan but I hope we could come back soon. Most likely at nighttime. Love and Other Drugs - Review. 02/10/2011
Prior to watching Love and other Drugs, all I knew about the film is that it’s a romcom that stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway with lots of sex and nudity involved. The trailers (or at least those 15-seconders that I’ve seen) didn’t really give anything so it’s hard to discern which is fair to reveal about the plot. Does anyone else know before seeing the film that it’s actually set in the 90s? Or that there’s actually some real drama within the plot set in the world prescription drugs? Or (this may be the biggest spoiler I give but really, it was revealed in the first 20 minutes of the film) that Anne Hathaway’s character isn’t just a cute brunette with curly hair but also suffering from an early onset of Parkinson’s disease? Yeah...pretty heavy stuff right? And I understand that the production house or whatever would be keeping this from the audience through marketing since they’re positioning it mainly on the lead characters (and them making out) but it’s a shame because that story within the film is substantially more interesting than what is being advertised. It’s a breath of fresh air from the ever recycled, silly romcoms that we are subjected too often. Written and directed by Edward Zwick, the film is loosely based on Jamie Reidy’s autobiography, Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra salesman, only in that book Anne Hathaway’s character is nowhere to be found since they wanted this to be a romantic comedy that would make a lot of money in the box-office capitalizing on the sex scenes of Jake and Anne. So taking it from there, you can already grasp that this film has all the signs of something that could’ve been great but only settled for good. I won’t tell much about the plot anymore since I gather I gave up enough in the first paragraph, I’ll just say it is set in the medical drug prescription world and judging from what I watched, you can really tell that the film wanted to delve in more on the medical side and what goes on behind the scenes that patients never get to see in this cutthroat business. Instead, it’s a romcom and has to capitalize on the plenty of sex scenes within the film which helped remarkably in establishing the depth between Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Maggie’s (Anne Hathaway) characters. Well, you get the main plot now. The age old dilemma between love and ambition only that love has excess baggage called Parkinson’s. It’s a very interesting plot treated in a lazy manner of montage after montage leading to a conventional climax, abandoning all the interesting conflicts and moral dilemma the film has opened to in the first hal of the film. Acting-wise, Jake and Anne had real chemistry. The two had previously worked together as a married couple in Brokeback Mountain which may have helped them to achieve the comfort level needed in order to push far as what they did here in Love and other drugs. Gyllenhaal was believable acting with real maturity with his role and Hathaway, who’s been impressive with her recent film choices (I don’t know about the Dark Knight rises though) is bold, fearless and strong in handling her character with medical problems and serious emotional issues. All in all, it was a good film. I’m actually pleasantly surprised since I expected it to be bad but still, it could’ve been way better than what was shown. I particularly like how they used dark humor in exploring two damaged people. It’s intelligent. It’s funny. It missed the mark towards the end but it’s a welcome departure from typical romcoms and a welcome attempt at a kind of modern, frank storytelling. The King's Speech - Review 02/08/2011
When I first heard about this film, I immediately dismissed it as a shameless Oscar‐bait. It has the proper ingredients. It’s a period English monarch drama with a cast led by previous Academy Award nominees and winners loaded with stiff English accents and beautifully styled clothing. In all honesty, I don’t think the average moviegoer have much to be excited about this film but I got good reviews from a professor and someone from twitter so I decided to give it a try. I watched the trailer and I found it interesting enough. Written by David Seidler and directed by Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech is a true‐drama story of a stammering king and his odd relationship with a peculiar speech therapist and how this affair, brokered by the King’s wife, Elizabeth has grown into an unlikely friendship. These characters are portrayed with theatrical gusto by Colin Firth as the stuttering monarch, King George VI, Geoffrey Rush as the eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue and Helena Bonham Carter as the king’s wife in her pre‐Queen Mother incarnations as the Duchess of York. On the whole, The King’s Speech goes beyond most extravagantly decorated period film with uninteresting plots. The film works not because we see a historically important personage undergo and overcome a debilitating verbal ailment but because we see a human being do so. We see the King is as messed up as most of us dealing with repressed emotions and childhood issues. Colin Firth has received much kudos from critics everywhere not only because of the technical acting skills of speaking with a stammer and emulating that of King George VI’s but because he humanizes the king making the character a very relatable one as to being a haughty personality in a poor little rich boy facade. A fault I see with the film is how it seemingly trivialized some scenes that are presumed to be historically huge like that of King George V’s death or the abdication of King Edward. However, this has made the scenes of sessions between Logue and Bertie more interesting because the screenplay has focused more on their relationship which isn’t exactly a bad thing but I just wished more attention were put into those parts. All in all, I find the film captivating. I watched the film because of my curiosity with its Oscar nods and though I may not find it exactly award‐worthy (except for Colin Firth’s moving and engaging performance), I still liked the film because of its unusual, intimate and interesting depiction of a king and his story of personal triumph. Ignore the hype and watch it for what it really is. Post Lasallian Week Post 02/01/2011
And because my previous post was a little too heavy on the emotional department that has gathered an unexpected traffic from site visitors, mostly the people i actually know since I don't really put my emotions out there that often (and I wrote the blog in less than 10 minutes so forgive the errors and typos!) I decided to post something lighter and I noticed I forgot to blog about the Lasallian Festival that happened last week here (i've been a little busy with the production and all) and no this won't be an evaluative commentary on what happened, I won't even discuss what happened day per day. So there, I was one of the production directors of the Kick-Off event that happened last Tuesday led by our unparalled Over-all Director Ms. Anne C. Dumala formerly known as Mian Rayray (is it bad to name drop like this on blogs? I have no blogetiquette if so). We were called on only days before the actual event and like woah but hey, this ain't the first time we're handling an event production in a limited time. So the day arrived and as expected, the event won't go as smoothly as planned, so many mishaps and aberrations and altercations between the production team, the talents and the crowd. Anyway, they make good stories, I think on the unofficial production dinner we had after the event, every one has a story to share on some weird mishap that happened and how they handled it, of course I had my own throughout the event. Some that particularly stood out was when I going bananas about the music to be used for the Cultural Presentation (only minutes before they perform and they still haven't given their music piece!) and the misunderstanding with one cheerdance team from this college that thought they were part of the event when in fact we only called on the first 3 teams that were awarded and asked to perform ("This is not a rematch"). At the end of the day , it was all good and we did what we had to do and I am proud to say that in that more than 5 hours of presentation, Walang Dead Air (or at least dead air that lasted for more than 10 seconds) and of course I won't let the event pass without me having good photos!!! So I asked my friend Danielle Huertas to take photos of me before the event starts and then the second photos is a really cool candid photo taken by Tracy Santarin, I think 10 minutes before the dragon came. (post processing of the photos by me. :D ) And then the week went on with a lot of different events that's why for our photography class we were asked as a class to cover an event and compile it. We were lucky enough to be assigned an uneventful day (insert sarcmark here) so we just chose the Faculty Recognition event with the 50's-60s theme. I won't say much about the event but i love how some professors really glammed it up! Here's a sample photo I took, unedited pa, we plan to post-process all the photos to have that vintage look. So there, my last Lasallian festival and mist likely the last big event I'll be handling before I graduate! Thanks to all of the production team!! Till we work together again!! |
